5 rumors around Android 6.1 we believe in

As Android 6.0 Marshmallow approaches more and more smartphones, new rumors regarding the next update, Android 6.1 to be specific, arise. As most sources claim, it is supposed to be the maintenance and consolidation release that still carries the Marshmallow tag. That makes it pretty clear that this version is not going to bring about any extreme changes to the existing platform, but nevertheless, certain features are to be introduced. And of course, we decided to check them out for you.
- Just recently Andrew Bowers (Google’s director of consumer hardware) made it very clear – “split screen is in the works”. The name says it all. From what is known, the feature will most likely work the same way it does on the latest iPads or Samsung and LG handsets. Namely, it lets you use two apps having them open side-by-side.
- Let’s admit it, being the end users we have certain issues dealing with app permissions. Android 6.0 Marshmallow did give the users a feeling of controlling things more. The speculation now is that there are security concerns surrounding apps with screen overlay permissions able to trick users into agreeing to overreaching permissions. So we would say that Google might want to reconsider the approach and either give users another layer of control or simply make certain changes to the permission system itself.
- You’ve probably heard quite a lot of rumors regarding an upcoming flagship from HTC codenamed “Perfume”. Well, guess what. As the rumors go, and quite a lot of them, this is going to be one of the first smartphones besides Nexus devices that is going to be shipped with Android 6.1.
- Annual Google I/O event is considered to be the most likely occasion for Android 6.1 to be presented. The I/O conference traditionally takes place in May. That makes us assume that the announcement happens in May, while June will be the month of the release to roll out.
- Undoubtedly, there is no way the new big update of the platform can do without the maintenance fixes. Apart from many great features Marshmallow did bring about some bugs, which leaves an area for improvement for the 6.1. There are quite a few reports as to battery drain issues, broken voice calling, proximity sensor malfunctions, MMS message sending and sound problems.
